Nikki Haley, Governor of South Carolina, made headlines on Tuesday by vetoing a bill initiated by the Democrats which would provide sixth graders with government-sponsored information encouraging parents to get the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine for their children as well as one free HPV vaccine for seventh graders.  Haley has received a barrage of criticism for her actions, and charges of hypocrisy for having previously sponsored a bill in 2007 that would have mandated the HPV vaccine in South Carolina, even though she ultimately withdrew her backing because the bill did not contain an opt-out provision.  While the current bill had broad bipartisan support, Governor Haley rejected it as unnecessary and because it would be a precursor to a vaccine mandate entirely dependent on government funding.  More importantly, however, Haley was quoted as saying her previous support of a human papillomavirus vaccine mandate was a mistake:  now that she has a 14 year-old daughter she feels differently about “what I am going to do as a parent and what I want for my child.”¹

Currently, the American public through our government agencies, the CDC, the FDA the US Public Health Service, the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases is being told that only by vaccinating all children and infants, all adults and seniors can we confer complete protective immunity from major diseases, whether H1N1, the seasonal flu, chicken pox, measles, hepatitis, etc. to any given individual. Their arguments have never been put to the test. It is virtually impossible to have open, independent, objective scientific and public health discourse. You either accept without challenge that vaccines provide permanent lifetime immunity, or you are immediately relegated as a quack. However, a careful analysis and review of the scientific literature shows that no vaccine or combination of vaccines can be proven to confer complete immunity and be safe.

The CDC is celebrating its annual Influenza Vaccination Week which runs from December 4^th through the 10^th.¹ There will be a media onslaught as they try to persuade us that we will be in dire straights if we don’t get the flu vaccine. All of the regulatory bodies and the opinion leaders, the CDC, the FDA, the Institute of Allergies and Infectious Diseases, the AMA, the American Academy of Pediatrics and all the health care providers would have us believe that flu is a serious illness that can only be prevented by annual vaccination of everyone from 6 months of age on up. They try to persuade us by showing celebrities like Anderson Cooper getting a vaccine on coast-to-coast TV under the watchful gaze of Dr. Sanjay Gupta. Or they try to instill us with fear: flu is unpredictable, it can be severe, it can kill -- and there might not be enough vaccine for everyone! What if there is a pandemic? Should we be worried? Should we get the vaccine to protect our friends and loved ones? Maybe not. Let’s take a look at some of the facts the CDC would rather you didn’t know.

Is It Really Dangerous Not to Get the Flu Vaccine?

The CDC’s website used to state that 36,000 Americans die of flu each year, but this number was always seriously exaggerated. First, the CDC inflated the numbers by lumping together deaths from flu and pneumonia as though they were the same thing when actually, the annual deaths from pneumonia not caused by flu have always been far greater than those from flu. More significantly, this number was never based on recorded deaths. It came instead from a statistical model which only estimates mortality but doesn’t actually count fatalities.² This year, however, the CDC’s website reflects the criticism they have received about this overstatement. In an impressive downward revision, the CDC now states that “over a period of 30 years, between 1976 and 2006, estimates of flu-associated deaths in the United States range from a low of about 3,000 to a high of about 49,000 people.”³ Quite a difference! For 2007, the CDC’s own statistics show that the number of deaths actually caused by influenza was just 411, and the death rate was therefore only 1 out of 1,000,000 people.⁴

In late 2009, reports of faulty gas pedals, obstructive floor carpets, and failing breaks in Toyota and Lexus vehicles generated uproar across major media networks. During a 4-year period beginning in 2006, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) had reported 5 deaths, 17 injuries and 13 crashes, and an additional 29 deaths between 2000 and 2005. There was no hesitation among the networks and federal officials to demonize Toyota for knowingly risking the lives of people solely to empty its dealership lots. Even Congress quickly called for a Congressional investigation, and Toyota took upon itself the responsibility to recall over 8 million vehicles.

As the NHTSA was collecting crash data on Toyota’s lemons, the Centers for Disease Control’s (CDC) Vaccine Adverse Events Reporting System (VAERS) database was gathering casualty data following vaccinations with Merck’s human papilloma virus (HPV) vaccine, Gardasil. And it was clear that Merck was far ahead and winning its race against Toyota for the Lemon of the Decade Award. Using data from the CDC, the vaccine watch organization Sanevax determined that, since Gardasil’s launch in 2006 until November 2012, the HPV vaccine was linked to 121 deaths and over 27,485 medical injuries of young girls, some as young as 11 years old.

The U.S. Center for Disease Control (CDC) states 90% of all HPV infections clear on their own with no symptoms or medical treatment. Yes, human papillomavirus (HPV) may be one of the most commonly sexually transmitted viruses in the country, but in the vast majority of cases there are no serious health consequences to being exposed to human papillomavirus.

In those cases where infections with the same genotype of HPV persist over time, abnormal cervical lesions may develop. These abnormal lesions (CIN), classified 1, 2, or 3, are typically called ‘precancerous’ lesions. Not many people are aware of the fact that most CIN1 lesions go away on their own within two years. 25-50% of CIN2 lesions regress on their own within the same two year time frame. According to the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), World Health Organization, the results of a pooled analysis of studies published between 1950 and 1993 indicated only 12% of CIN3 lesions progress to invasive cervical cancer.
