Gary Null & Richard Gale - Chris Hedges Resigns from PEN as Journalist of Conscience

Chris Hedges’ recent resignation from the PEN American Center, once a non-partisan organization dedicated to journalists and writers defending freedom of speech and human rights globally, is a reminder of the large impact that small individual acts of courage can make.  The reason for his departure from the organization is PEN’s appointment of former Assistant Deputy of State for International Affairs under Hillary Clinton, Suzanne Nossel, as its new executive director. Nossel's association with Clinton should make Hedges' opposition and decision to leave PEN obvious. As Nossel’s former boss, Hillary Clinton proved herself repeatedly to be a neocon disguised as a faux liberal serving corporate interests masquerading as democratic foreign policy. Her legacy of increasing tensions and violent conflicts in the Middle East, Africa and Asia has left a sordid legacy that will take years to mend and heal. History books will certainly not remember our former Secretary of State as a heroine emboldened by ethical principles of human rights, peaceful diplomacy, freedom of expression and contributing to more a equitable and sustainable world. Hedges’ understands this all too well having personally experienced America’s militaristic agenda in many war zones. He has the insight to recognize that a Nossel leadership will divert PEN’s agenda and mission to the right-center of the corporate Democrats thereby better serving Wall Street and the military industrial complex.

PEN’s website claims it champions “freedom of expression and defended writers of conscience.” Among its contributions is its role in crafting an article of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.  It has a rich tradition of lobbying for journalists and writers who have been persecuted, imprisoned and murdered for exposing truth to power. At one time, PEN represented a worthy tradition, abiding by true progressive ethics to promote freedom of speech, which earned it the privilege of having true journalists, such as Chris Hedges, within its membership. The Executive Director appointment of a corporate Democrat like Suzanne Nossel is a blatant betrayal of PEN’s legacy. Why such a person would be appointed to lead an organization dedicated to human rights requires deeper investigation into the hidden dealings of the Obama administration and the faux Democrats who are intent to steal truth by any means to fuel their self-righteousness.

But there is lesson here beyond PEN. We must dispel illusions that Barak Obama, as the first African American president, speaks on behalf of all Blacks and minorities. We must speak out against the myth that Hillary Clinton, because she is a woman in a position of power and influence, speaks on behalf of all women and their struggles for equality in our patriarchal culture. We must reject that Suzanne Nossels, because she is now leading a distinguished journalist organization, will represent PEN’s legacy of upholding the values of human rights and justice. Instead, we must side with Hedges that PEN has appointed a wolf in sheep’s clothing who is more likely to serve the masters who have repeatedly acted against PEN’s professed values.

Therefore we commend Chris Hedges for his courage to publicly challenge PEN’s promotion of Nossel. His resignation should serve as an example for other journalists to similarly quit the organization in protest of the betrayal of PEN’s 22-year heritage of fostering the best journalism has to offer in challenging the rulers of a world dominated by power, money, corporate influence and political ideologists.

Statement from Chris Hedges:

I will not be participating as a speaker in the PEN World Voices Festival in May. I will not participate because of your decision to select Suzanne Nossel as Executive Director of the PEN American Center. This appointment makes a mockery of PEN as a human rights organization and belittles the values PEN purports to defend. I spent seven years in the Middle East, most of them as the Middle East Bureau Chief of The New York Times. The suffering of the Palestinians under Israeli occupation and the plight of those caught up in our imperial wars in countries such as Iraq are not abstractions to me. Nossel’s relentless championing of preemptive war—which under international law is illegal—as a State Department official along with her callous disregard for Israeli mistreatment of the Palestinians and her refusal as a government official to denounce the use of torture and use of extra-judicial killings, makes her utterly unfit to lead any human rights organization, especially one that has global concerns. PEN American Center, by appointing Nossel, has unwittingly highlighted its own failure to defend and speak out for our dissidents, especially Bradley Manning. I hereby resign from PEN. I will wait until the organization returns to its original mandate to defend those who are persecuted, including those within the United States, before returning to the organization.

Sincerely,

Chris Hedges

Chris Hedges -- The War in the Shadows

A Swedish documentary filmmaker released a film last year called “Last Chapter—Goodbye Nicaragua.” In it he admitted that he unknowingly facilitated a bombing, almost certainly orchestrated by the Sandinista government of Nicaragua, which took the lives of three reporters I worked with in Central America. One of them, Linda Frazier, was the mother of a 10-year-old son. Her legs were torn apart by the blast, at La Penca, Nicaragua, along the border with Costa Rica, in May of 1984. She bled to death as she was being taken to the nearest hospital, in Ciudad Quesada, Costa Rica.

The admission by Peter Torbiornsson that he unwittingly took the bomber with him to the press conference was a window into the sordid world of espionage, terrorism and assassination that was an intimate part of every conflict I covered. It exposed the cynicism of undercover operatives on all sides, men and women who lie and deceive for a living, who betray relationships, including between each other, who steal and who carry out murder. One knows them immediately. Their ideological allegiances do not matter. They have the faraway eyes of the disconnected, along with nebulous histories and suspicious and vague associations. They tell incongruous personal stories and practice small deceits that are part of a pathological inability to tell the truth. They can be personable, even charming, but they are also invariably vain, dishonest and sinister. They cannot be trusted. It does not matter what side they are on. They were all the same. Gangsters.

All states and armed groups recruit and use members of this underclass. These personalities gravitate to intelligence agencies, terrorist cells, homeland security, police departments, the special forces and revolutionary groups where they can live a life freed from moral and legal constraints. Right and wrong are banished from their vocabulary. They disdain the constraints of democracy. They live in this nebulous underworld to satisfy their lusts for power and violence. They have no interest in diplomacy and less in peace. Peace would put them out of business; for them it is simply the temporary absence of war, which they are sure is inevitable. Their job is to use violence to purge the world of evil. And in the United States they have taken as hostages our diplomatic service and our foreign policy establishment. The CIA has become a huge private army, as Chalmers Johnson pointed out in his book “Nemesis: The Last Days of the American Republic,” that is “unaccountable to the Congress, the press or the public because everything it does is secret.” C. Wright Mills called the condition “military metaphysics”—“the cast of mind that defines international reality as basically military.”

Since the attacks of 9/11, the U.S. Special Operations Command (USSOCOM)—which includes the Green Berets, the Army Rangers and the Navy SEALs—has seen its budget quadrupled. There are now some 60,000 USSOCOM operatives, whom the president can dispatch to kill without seeking congressional approval or informing the public. Add to this the growth of intelligence operatives. As Dana Priest and William M. Arkinreported in The Washington Post, “Twenty-four [new intelligence] organizations were created by the end of 2001, including the Office of Homeland Security and the Foreign Terrorist Asset Tracking Task Force. In 2002, 37 more were created to track weapons of mass destruction, collect threat tips, and coordinate the new focus on counterterrorism. That was followed the next year by 36 new organizations; and 26 after that; and 31 more; and 32 more; and 20 or more each in 2007, 2008, and 2009. In all, at least 263 organizations have been created or reorganized as a response to 9/11.”

Stephen Barrett and Medical McCarthyism

By S.L & R.A
(Concerned that those who engage in uncontested attacks against supporters of alternative health
would misconstrue me and my co-author as such, we mean to clarify the following: we are not
advocates of the alternative health movement, rather, we are advocates and supporters of truth. - S.L
& R.A)
Introduction
Dr. Stephen Barrett is a ubiquitous figure in the world of health and medicine with a unique talent.
A talent, described by Health and Human Services official, Dr. Thomas R. Eng, as a gift for widely
"[influencing] behavior change" via interactive media. Elaborating, Eng states that "[Barrett] tailors
information and interactions to the individual," adding, "In print media, there is some kind of
vetting. In interactive, anyone or their brother can slap a Web page together."
One assumes that Barrett, in his efforts and opinions, is authoritative and correct, speaking as a
retired physician / psychiatrist who's been interviewed on innumerable occasions by CNN, The
New York Times, has testified as an expert before congress, and, in a larger sense, has been
adopted by mainstream media as the "consumer watchdog" du jour within the field of medicine.
Well, alternative medicine, more specifically.
He has authored reports on many of the most accomplished practitioners and experts in the
alternative health movement and in doing so, has generated a fair amount of controversy and mixed
media attention. So much, in fact, that the reports on his site have come to dominate web search
engine results, and in effect, preemptively tainting the reputations of hundreds of legitimate, well
credentialed alternative health practitioners. Upon discovering this, my curiosity was piqued and I
felt compelled to conduct some independent research on the matter, and hopefully, reach a
conclusion as to whether Barrett was, indeed, an expert, or guilty of what Dr. Eng describes as
"medical McCarthyism".
My focus would be the history and relationship between Barrett and Dr. Gary Null. Null is
arguably the most respected, prolific advocate and high-profile voice in the alternative heath
movement, influencing a massively wide spectrum of people throughout a varied host of philanthropic efforts and causes. The purpose of this paper is to not to bring direct challenge to
Barrett's work or ideology, but rather to present facts and convey reasoned, journalistic
interrogation into the heart of this debate. To that end, we can look to Null's extensive work and
research on the negative effects of fluoride, mercury, vaccines, sugar and caffeine, all of which,
Barrett has called in to question. Research will demonstrate that science firmly supports all of
Null's conclusions and solutions on these topics. Fact checking and research is the cornerstone of
the journalistic process, yet, Barrett and those media outlets who would employ his subjective
opinion as scientific fact, quite simply, have not done their homework here.

Sandra Siagian - The Incoherent Imperialist: Deconstructing Tom Friedman's Work

By Sandra Siagian, Inter Press Service

http://www.alternet.org/story/153388/the_incoherent_imperialist%3A_deconstructing_tom_friedman%27s_work

A new book on the influential New York Times columnist Thomas Friedman sets out to debunk his hawkish, neo-liberal views, accusing him of overt racism, factual errors and skewed judgments on issues ranging from the United States invasion of Iraq to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Deconstructing one of the country's highest-paid journalists, Belen Fernandez's The Imperial Messenger: Thomas Friedman at Work presents a comprehensive overview of the man - and three-time Pulitzer Prize winner - she describes as "characterized by reduction of complex international phenomena to simplistic rhetoric and theorems that rarely withstand the test of reality".

Fernandez, 29, admits that prior to 2009 she wasn't too familiar with the work of the foreign affairs columnist. It wasn't until that summer she decided to analyze Friedman's work after reading "a sequence of ridiculous articles".

Finding it difficult to ''cram all of that incompetence into a concise book'', Fernandez divided the content into three issues that ''most enraged'' her, analyzing his work along with a brief examination of the shortcomings of the US media.

Adrian Salbuchi - George Orwell’s Guide to the News

By Adrian Salbuchi

Global Research, December 1, 2011

Russia Today

http://globalresearch.ca/index.php?context=va&aid=27971

The Western mainstream media falsifies the news resorting to euphemisms, half-truths and lies in the best (worst) style of George Orwell’s novel 1984. We all live in the unreal world of “Newspeak” used by the Global Power Elite to control our minds.

Man gets confused when things that happen around him and to him, or which are done in his name, cannot be properly grasped, understood or made sense of. Normally, such confusion leads to inaction. If you’re lost at night in the middle of a forest but you can still see the stars, then a bit of astronomical knowledge will at least quickly tell you which way is north. But if it’s cloudy or you’re ignorant of the constellations in starry heaven, then you might as well light up a fire and do nothing until dawn…. You’re Lost!

Eric Boehlert - 7 Things Fox Viewers Are Wildly Misinformed About

By Eric Boehlert, Media Matters for America

The release this week of yet another survey indicating the more you watch Fox News the less they know, has once again shone a spotlight on one of the unique features that defines Rupert Murdoch's cable news outlet - it is very, very good at misinforming people. And it's very bad at reporting the news. In other words: Propaganda? Yes. News? Not so much.

It's true that the most recent survey, conducted by Fairleigh Dickinson University, only polled adults in New Jersey and doesn't represent national indictment against Fox. Nonetheless, the findings created amedia stir because they reinforce what pollsters and academics previously discovered; that one of the country's all-news channels consistently leaves viewers less informed.

What's stunning is how many different areas of the news and public policy Fox viewers are misinformed about. For instance, the Fairleigh Dickinson survey asked viewers about recent grassroots uprisings in Arab nations [emphasis added]:

"Progressive Radio Network Host Danny Schechter, Friday's @ 1pm(EDT)" - Oh, The Pain of The Believer: Barack’s Betrayals Offer Lessons We Can’t Deny

By Danny Schechter
Author of the Crime of our Time

Journalists are not supposed to have political opinions, and yet we all do. Our “biases” are usually disguised, not blatant or overtly partisan, and can be divined in what stories we cover and how we cover them,

Even ‘just the fact’s maam,’ journos for big Media have to decide which facts to include and which to ignore.

Our outlooks are always shaped by our worldviews, values and experience, not too mention the outlets we work for.

Which brings me to the challenge of seeking truth and recognizing it when you see it.

I have to admit that I was seduced by the idea of Barack Obama.

The idea of a black President, the idea of a young President, the idea of an articulate President, and the idea of a man married to such a stand up women from a working class family was hard to resist.

Russ Baker: Who–and What–Are Behind the “Official History” of the Bin Laden Raid?

http://whowhatwhy.com/2011/08/17/raidbinladen/

by Russ Baker

The establishment media just keep getting worse. They’re further and further from good, tough investigative journalism, and more prone to be pawns in complicated games that affect the public interest in untold ways. A significant recent example is The New Yorker’s vaunted August 8 exclusive on the vanquishing of Osama bin Laden.

The piece, trumpeted as the most detailed account to date of the May 1 raid in Abbottabad Pakistan, was an instant hit. “Got the chills half dozen times reading @NewYorker killing bin Laden tick tock…exquisite journalism,” tweeted the digital director of the PBS show Frontline.  The author, freelancer Nicholas Schmidle, was quickly featured on the Charlie Rose show, an influential determiner of “chattering class” opinion. Other news outlets rushed to praise the story as “exhaustive,” “utterly compelling,” and on and on.

To be sure, it is the kind of granular, heroic story that the public loves, that generates follow-up bestsellers and movie options. The takedown even has a Hollywood-esque code name: “Operation Neptune’s Spear”

Here’s the introduction to the mission commander, full of minute details that help give it a ring of authenticity and the most intimate reportorial access:

Academics fronting ghostwritten medical journal articles as ‘guest authors’ should be charged with fraud, say UofT law professors

http://media.utoronto.ca/media-releases/education/academics-fronting-ghostwritten-medical-journal-articles-as-%E2%80%98guest-authors%E2%80%99-should-be-charged-with-fraud-say-uoft-law-professors/

University of Toronto

Posted on August 3, 2011

TORONTO, ON – Two University of Toronto Faculty of Law professors argue that academics who ‘lend’ their names, and receive substantial credit as guest authors of medical and scientific articles ghostwritten by industry writers, should be charged with professional and academic misconduct and fraud, even if they contain factually correct information.

In an article published today in PLoS Medicine, Professors Simon Stern and Trudo Lemmens argue “Guest authorship is a disturbing violation of academic integrity standards, which form the basis of scientific reliability.” In addition, “The false respectability afforded to claims of safety and effectiveness through the use of academic investigators risks undermining the integrity of biomedical research and patient care.”

In “Legal Remedies for Medical Ghostwriting: Imposing Fraud Liability on Guest Authors of Ghostwritten Articles,” Stern and Lemmens argue that since medical journals, academic institutions, and professional disciplinary bodies have not succeeded in enforcing effective sanctions, a more successful deterrence would be through the imposition of legal liability on the guest authors, “and may give rise to claims that could be pursued in a class action based on the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act (RICO).”

"Michael Collins" - Running Rupert to Ground -- Vox Populi, Vox Dei

http://www.opednews.com/articles/Running-Rupert-to-Ground--by-Michael-Collins-110718-579.html

July 18, 2011

By Michael Collins

How will they get rid of Rupert Murdoch and his toxic enterprises?

July 4, 2011 may turn into the people's Independence Day.  On that day, stellar journalist Nick Davies of the Guardian released his story; Missing Milly Dowler's voicemail was hacked by News of the World.  Twelve year old Milly Dowler had been kidnapped with foul play feared.  The Murdoch tabloid couldn't resist.  News of the World (the News) hired a private detective to hack Milly's voicemail.  Finding the mail box full, the News or its hired dick deleted existing messages to make room for new ones, all to fuel their ongoing coverage.  The deleted messages raised hopes by Milly's parents that she was still alive and using her voicemail. (Image)

The Davies story elicited a reaction of near universal shock, outrage, and revulsion.  Milly had already been murdered by the time the Murdoch paper began its illegal tapping.

The public revulsion resulted in immediate and fervent popular demands for justice.  Those demands were compounded by follow-up stories on other Murdoch media hacking.  As it turned out, the News also broke into the voicemails of war widows to capture their most intimate exchanges on the loss of fallen soldiers in Afghanistan and Iraq.   All in all, at least 4,000 citizens had their voicemails hacked to boost the Murdoch publication's circulation and profits.
