“Agence France-Presse” - US jobless claims jump to January high

Agence France-Presse

April 28, 2011

http://www.rawstory.com/rs/2011/04/28/us-jobless-claims-jump-to-january-high/

WASHINGTON — New claims for US unemployment insurance benefits surged more than expected last week to the highest level since January, official data showed Thursday.

The Labor Department reported initial jobless claims rose to a seasonally adjusted 429,000 in the week ending April 23.

That was sharply higher than the average analyst estimate of 390,000.

The Labor Department revised slightly upward the prior week's claims number to 404,000.

The department gave no explanation for the unexpected rise in the weekly indicator on the jobs market.

The four-week moving average, which helps to smooth volatility, was 408,500 claims, an increase of 9,250 from the prior week. The average had been below the 400,000 threshold for eight consecutive weeks.

The US unemployment rate fell to 8.8 percent in March, its lowest level in two years, as the economy struggles to recover from recession.

“David Roberts” - Policy in an age of post-truth politics

David Roberts

April 28, 2011

http://www.grist.org/politics/2011-04-28-policy-in-an-age-of-post-truth-politics

As Joe Romm noted the other day, Ezra Klein has an interesting column in WaPo making the case that, in terms of policy, Obama "is a moderate Republican of the early 1990s." Putting aside the emergency measures responding to the economic crisis, Obama's signature initiatives have been a health-care bill modeled on Mitt Romney's and a cap-and-trade bill modeled on George Bush Sr.'s. Both of those original policies were successful, but when Obama took them up, Republicans fled en masse. Says Klein, "as Democrats moved to the right to pick up Republican votes, Republicans moved to the right to oppose Democratic proposals."

I agree with Kevin Drum that those policies were never truly Republican: They were compromises Republicans felt forced to accept to avoid worse (i.e., more liberal) policies. It's probably fair to call them centrist. Either way, I'm not sure "moved to the right" is the best way to describe what Republicans have done.

“Steve Kornacki” - Overnight poll: More than half of Republicans still unpersuaded Obama was born here

Steve Kornacki

April 28, 2011

http://www.salon.com/news/politics/birthers/index.html?story=/politics/war_room/2011/04/28/birther_poll

An alarming poll from CBS News and the New York Times last week found that nearly 70 percent of Republicans either believed President Obama wasn't born on American soil or weren't sure.

Now, in the wake of President Obama's decision to release his long-form birth certificate Tuesday morning, there is a bit of encouraging news: According to a snap poll conducted by Survey USA, 24 percent of Republicans say that doubts they previously had about where Obama was born have been erased and that they are now satisfied that their president was born here.

"Mary Elizabeth Williams - Why Beyonce's viral fitness campaign is doomed

The singer and the first lady are promoting physical education. Too bad her husband is helping to kill it

Mary Elizabeth Williams

April 28, 2011

http://www.salon.com/life/obesity/index.html?story=/ent/tv/feature/2011/04/28/beyonce_michelle_obama_obesity_hypocrisy

How does Michelle Obama want to fight childhood obesity in America? By promoting healthy eating choices, regular activity, and a little Sasha Fierce. In a video released Wednesday from the NAB Educational Foundation, a high-heeled Beyoncé leads a cafeteria full of kids in a rousing invitation to "Move Your Body." And on May 3, middle school students across the country will participate in a simultaneous performance of the song, with a little help from the NABEF's instructional videos of the choreography. Recess just got funky – if only for one day.

The public service-spirited campaign, part of Michelle Obama's Let's Move! initiative, is certainly a decent two-step in the right direction. Childhood obesity has tripled in America in the last three decades. And with no turnaround in sight, it's a deepening crisis with significant long-range consequences – and one that is disproportionately affecting low-income and minority children. The health problems associated with being overweight and obese in childhood range from increased risk for Type 2 diabetes, heart disease and high blood pressure to the immediate and very real threats of eating disorders, self-esteem issues and bullying.

“Dr. Mercola” - Popular Drink Increases Stroke Risk

Dr. Mercola

April 28, 2011

http://blogs.mercola.com/sites/vitalvotes/archive/2011/04/28/popular-drink-increases-stroke-risk.aspx

A study of more than 2500 people showed a significant correlation between diet soda consumption and stroke risk.

Researchers divided people into seven groups, ranging from those who drank less than one soda of any type per month to those who regularly consumed both diet soda and regular soda. The scientists accounted for age, ethnicity, gender, exercise habits, smoking status, alcohol consumption, and caloric intake.

Planet Green reports:

“After considering all the other factors studied, researchers concluded that regular diet soda drinkers had a 48 percent increased chance of having a stroke, while those who drank diet soda every day had a 61 percent increased risk of stroke over those who drank other types of soda.”

“Dr. Mercola” - Half of Americans Use Supplements

Dr. Mercola

April 28, 2011

http://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2011/04/28/half-of-americans-use-supplements.aspx

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have found that more than half of U.S. adults use dietary supplements such as multivitamins, minerals or herbs. The number has risen from just 42 percent in 1988 to 53 percent in 2006.

The most popular supplements are multivitamins, which were used by 39 percent of U.S. adults in 2006. Some consumers may be viewing supplements as a way to make up for a poor diet, which is not the best approach.

Combating the “The Noon-Day Demon”: A Study on How to Overcome Depression Naturaly

By Gary Null

Depression"20% of adults in the U.S. experience one or more depressive episodesVirginia Woolf, Ernest Hemingway, Michelangelo Buonarroti, Gustav Mahler. What did they have in common, other than their great talents? They all suffered from what author Andrew Solomon very appropriately call “The Noon-Day Demon” : Depression. Dr. Jay Lombard, Board Certified Neurologist and former Chief of Neurology at Westchester Square Medical Center, author of “The Brain Wellness Plan,” puts depression at the top of the list of modern epidemics. According to Dr. Lombard, 20% of adults in the U.S. experience one or more depressive episodes, while 5% receive a diagnosis of clinical depression. Of the latter group 15% of the cases end in suicide. An especially alarming trend is the increase of incidence of depression among teens and young adults, and even children. Statistics show that an average of 14 teens kill themselves every day. That’s 5,000 kids a year. It is estimated that 5% of American teenagers currently suffer from depression severe enough to warrant medical treatment, but these numbers may not reflect a much more alarming reality. It is no surprise, given these statistics, that pharmaceutical companies are so eager to fund research aimed at finding effective relief for this life threatening condition. And yet, current drug treatment seems to fall short of expectations. It works sometimes, for some people, but for many it becomes a frustrating juggling act from one drug to another, waiting for as elusive relief that never seems to come, or never seems to stay. And while the initial lessening of symptoms offered by antidepressants is desirable and necessary, it carries the potential for serious, long-term, undesirable side effects such as tardive diskenesia, paranoid and psychotic reactions, and liver malfunctions, among others.

"M.Thornley" - Japanese philosopher and farmer greened deserts without pesticides or fertilizer

M.Thornley
http://www.naturalnews.com/032206_philosopher_farming.html

(NaturalNews) Fukuoka Masanobu, 1913-2008, a remarkable philosopher/farmer, rejected the use of technology and developed a method of 'natural farming' in which no tilling, weeding, or plowing is done, or fertilizers or pesticides used.

His seminal book, ``One Straw Revolution`` published in 1975, shares his insights and philosophy gained from 60 years in natural farming. Visiting the USA in 1979 and seeing land that had become desert, he realized his methods could return growth to land reduced to desert by conventional farming methods. He warned that large scale farming and cattle-raising caused desertification, or the loss of productive farm land.
