A new paper demonstrates that consuming genetically modified (GM) food leads to significant organ disruptions in rats and mice. Researchers reviewed data from 19 studies and found that parameters including blood and urine biochemistry and organ weights were significantly disrupted in the GM-fed animals.

The kidneys of males were the most affected, experiencing 43.5 percent of all the changes. The livers of females followed at more than 30 percent. Other organs may have been affected too, including the heart and spleen, and blood cells.

"Stephen C. Webster" - Obama to name Panetta Defense Secretary, Petraeus to lead CIA: report

http://www.rawstory.com/rs/2011/04/27/obama-to-name-panetta-defense-secretary-petraeus-to-lead-cia-report/?utm_source=Raw+Story+Daily+Update&utm_campaign=9f3fe1505a-4_27_114_27_2011&utm_medium=email

Wednesday, April 27th, 2011 -- 8:09 am

President Barack Obama was expected to announce that he's appointing Central Intelligence Agency Director Leon Panetta to lead the Department of Defense, and Gen. David Petraeus, who currently leads the Afghan occupation, to replace him.

News of the major shift in the administration comes from unnamed sources close to the president, according to The Wall Street Journal. The changes were said to be in the works for later this summer.

Current Defense Secretary Robert Gates has said he would leave this year.

Officials who spoke to the Journal said that Lt. Gen. John Allen would assume control of the Afghan occupation.

Panetta was former president Bill Clinton's chief of staff from 1994 to 1997, following a 16-year career as a lawmaker from California. His expertise in the House of Represenatives and in the Clinton administration was in budgets and finance, and he was widely believed to be taking the post at Defense to oversee the implementation of President Obama's budget cuts.

The report said the president's announcement will come Thursday.

“Stephen C.Webster” - GOP Reps Ryan, Webster face furious voters at town halls

Stephen C. Webster

April 27, 2011

http://www.rawstory.com/rawreplay/2011/04/gop-reps-ryan-webster-face-screaming-anger-at-town-halls/?utm_source=Raw+Story+Daily+Update&utm_campaign=9f3fe1505a-4_27_114_27_2011&utm_medium=email

In the words of MSNBC host Rachel Madddow, House Republicans are in the midst of a “collective freakout” over the public’s reaction to Rep. Paul Ryan’s (R-WI) budget plan, which cleared the House right before Congress went on vacation.

Among other items, Ryan’s budget would significantly cut Medicare spending, eventually phasing it out in exchange for a coupon program that would only cover a small percentage of seniors’ medical bills.

Four Republicans voted against it, and not a single Democrat voted for it.

Now, Republicans are starting to catch the anger that Democrats caught in 2009 in the midst of their push for President Obama’s health care reforms. In two of the most recent examples, Reps. Ryan and Webster (R-FL) were confronted by angry crowds demanding to know why they had voted to cut Medicare.

A recent Gallup poll found that the majority of Republicans do not want Medicare to be cut.

‘Joseph Romm’ - Ezra Klein: ‘Obama, based on his positions, is a moderate Republican of the early 1990s’

http://www.grist.org/politics/2011-04-26-ezra-klein-obama-moderate-republican-early-1990s

Klein writes, "as Democrats moved to the right to pick up Republican votes, Republicans moved to the right to oppose Democratic proposals."Photo: The White HouseThe Washington Post's Ezra Klein has a terrific column that places the failed climate bill into the political context that has been missing from so much of the recent debate:

If you put aside the emergency measures required by the financial crisis, three major policy ideas have dominated American politics in recent years: a plan that uses an individual mandate and tax subsidies to achieve near-universal health care; a cap-and-trade plan that attempts to raise the prices of environmental pollutants to better account for their costs; and bringing tax rates up from their Bush-era lows as part of a bid to reduce the deficit. In each case, the position that Obama and the Democrats have staked out is the very position that moderate Republicans have staked out before.

In the climate bill debate of the past two years, Obama and the Democrats embraced Republican ideas in an effort to minimize or avoid the partisanship inherent in other approaches that had been explicitly rejected by Republicans, including a tax and a massive ramp up in clean energy funding, as I've argued.

“Tom Philpott” - Students fight to save innovative garden-based public school in Detroit

http://www.grist.org/sustainable-food/2011-04-26-students-fight-to-save-innovative-garden-based-public-school-in-

When I visited Detroit last summer, I found it to be a place of extremes. On the one hand, a city buckling under the weight of decades of deindustrialization, white flight, and abandonment -- a city so gripped by economic malaise that it contained not even a single full-service supermarket. On the other, it also seemed a veritable beehive of community organizing, based mainly around urban agriculture.

It's not hard to see why the city's community leaders have settled on urban ag. It takes two devastating problems -- a surfeit of abandoned land, a lack of grocery stores -- and turns them into, respectively, a resource and an opportunity. Abundant land can be used to grow high-quality fresh food, which will then find a ready market among a citizenry that relies heavily on liquor stores for food shopping. I wrote up my impressions of Detroit in a broad overview and in a brief look at three especially interesting projects.

One project I visited briefly but didn't get a chance to write about was Catharine Ferguson Academy, a special public high school for pregnant girls. The school, featured in the documentary Grown in Detroit, is most famous for its large vegetable garden tended and harvested by the students. But its importance goes beyond gardening. Teenage pregnancy can be a tragic event -- it can severely limit educational and job opportunities for young women and lead to cycles of poverty and despair. The threat is particularly serious in a place like Detroit, where job opportunities are limited.

“Lisa Hymas” - Ron Paul hates energy subsidies, doubts climate change, and loves riding his bike

http://www.grist.org/election-2012/2011-04-27-ron-paul-hates-energy-subsidies-doubts-climate-change-loves-bike

"No war for oil, and no action for climate."Photo: Gage SkidmoreRon Paul kicked off his presidential bid on Tuesday, in the customary loosey-goosey exploratory-committee way. As standard-bearer for the libertarian wing of the Republican Party, the U.S. rep from southeast Texas has a small but diehard following. His fans will make some racket in conservative circles, as during his 2008 run, and he still won't have a chance in hell of winning the GOP nomination, as during his 2008 run.

Paul's government-can-do-no-right philosophy leads him to oppose energy and farm subsidies -- something many green-minded people can at least respect. Ditto with his opposition to wars over oil. His contention that the EPA is useless, well, not so much.

“Progressive Radio Host, Laura Flanders - Oil Prices: Gouge Us Baby One More Time

http://www.commondreams.org/view/2011/04/27-0

by Laura Flanders

Gas prices have been edging up since February, reaching $4 a gallon this Easter, and Republicans are gearing up to make a stink about it. To blame Democrats, that is, for setting things up this way.

Blaming green energy initiatives for driving up prices, House Republicans are planning to hold hearings on a slurry of bills aimed at expanding domestic oil production in response to high gasoline prices. Even the President admits gas prices effect his standing in the polls.

But it should be easy enough to fight back. While the five biggest oil companies report historically high profit earnings, the same GOP that would slash juice programs for poor kids in school stands firm for federal subsidies for big oil.

"Terry Macalister" - BP Expects to Resume Drilling in Gulf of Mexico within Months

http://www.commondreams.org/headline/2011/04/27-6

by Terry Macalister

BP has predicted it will be back drilling in the Gulf of Mexico within a matter of months despite continuing legal threats and rows over pollution from last year's Deepwater Horizon disaster. "We expect to be back and actively drilling during the second half of the year," Byron Grote, the company's chief financial officer, told financial analysts from the City of London on Wednesday.

BP hopes that drilling could begin soon despite legal rows over pollution from Deepwater Horizon disaster. (Photograph Reuters) The comments are likely to infuriate environmentalists who believe BP should be kept away from the Gulf, and could upset a US offshore regulator still considering whether to grant permits to BP.
