Ralph Nader: Institutional Insanity

If there was a mental health hospital for institutions the Republican Party and its top leaders would be admissible as clinically insane. Their bizarre wackopedia seems to contain no discernible boundaries. Repeatedly, these corporate supplicants oppose any measure, any regulation, any legislation that will directly help workers, consumers, the environment, small taxpayers and even investor-shareholders.

Robert Kuttner: What Now for the Democrats?

Let's imagine the political possibilities of the next two years and beyond. So far, President Obama's response to the drubbing of the mid-term has confirmed the progressive community's worst fears. Astonishingly, he still seems to believe the following: The American people care more about bipartisan compromise and budget cuts than about ending the economic crisis. If he just compromises a little more, the Republicans might still meet him halfway. The recipe for economic recovery has something to do with reducing the short term federal deficit. All three of these premises are disastrously wrong -- as politics and as economics.

Neal Ascherson: WikiLeaks Cables are Dispatches from a Beleaguered America in Imperial Retreat

There's more to the WikiLeaks dispatches than leaks. Look behind them, at the writers, and you see the loyal rearguard of America: an imperial power in retreat. There was a tradition in our Foreign Office that a retiring ambassador could blow off steam. In a final, exuberant telegram to Whitehall, he could say exactly what he thought of the country he was leaving, and of the folly of the Foreign Office in ignoring his advice. The best telegrams were treasured by young diplomats. But they began to leak into the press. And a few years ago this privilege was suppressed.

James Galbraith: Moment of Lies: Galbraith Attacks Lack of Evidence for Frantic Deficit Fear Mongering

The report of the National Commission on Fiscal Responsibility and Reform, issued on December 1, 2010 by Chairmen Erskine Bowles and Alan Simpson, is entitled ìThe Moment of Truth. The words appear in block caps on the second page, weighty and portentous. They reappear in the first paragraph of the preamble: ìThroughout our nationís history, Americans have found the courage to do right by our childrenís future. Deep down, every American knows that we face a moment of truth once again.
