“Ben White” - Japan crisis takes toll on U.S. economic recoveryv

Ben White

3/16/11

http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0311/51451.html

NEW YORK—The unfolding crisis in Japan has begun to have an impact on the fragile recovery of the U.S. economy despite assurances by Obama administration officials and many analysts that it does not pose a significant threat to economic growth here or across the globe.

Stocks plunged again on Wednesday, whipsawed by rampant fear that the one of Japan’s nuclear plants damaged by last week’s massive earthquake was spiraling into an uncontrollable meltdown. Despite a modest late day recovery, Wall Street’s three major indices have been falling for nearly a week, wiping out most of their gains for the year after rising sharply on hopes for a robust U.S. economic rebound..

“Agence France-Presse” - White House backs online ‘privacy bill of rights’

Agence France-Presse

March 16th, 2011

http://www.rawstory.com/rs/2011/03/16/white-house-backs-online-privacy-bill-of-rights/

WASHINGTON (AFP) – The White House urged Congress on Wednesday to approve a "consumer privacy bill of rights" that would regulate the collection and use of personal data on the Internet.

Assistant Commerce Secretary Lawrence Strickling called for the legislation at a hearing on online privacy held by the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation.

"The administration urges Congress to enact a 'consumer privacy bill of rights' to provide baseline consumer data privacy protections," he said.

Strickling said authority to enforce privacy protections should be given to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), which has been advocating a "Do Not Track" mechanism that would allow Internet users to opt out of having their activities monitored.

“John Walke” - A little background on the EPA’s new mercury and air toxics rule

 John Walke

March 16,  2011

http://www.grist.org/article/2011-03-16-epas-mercury-and-air-toxics-rule-bottom-lines-and-background

Today, the EPA announced the most important actions to clean up air pollution from dirty coal-burning power plants since the Clean Air Act was last updated in 1990.

EPA's proposed mercury and air toxics standards for power plants that burn coal and oil are projected to save as many as 17,000 American lives [PDF] every year by 2015. These standards also will prevent up to 120,000 cases of childhood asthma symptoms and there will be 11,000 fewer cases of acute bronchitis among children every year.

The standards also will avoid more than 12,000 emergency room and hospital visits and prevent 850,000 lost work days every year.

“Paul Breer” - What The Frack: Ohio Gov. John Kasich Wants To Open Up State Parks For Oil And Gas Exploration

Paul Breer

At the behest of then-Vice President Dick Cheney, an exemption was inserted into a 2005 energy bill — dubbed the “Haliburton loophole” — which stripped the EPA of its power to regulate a natural gas drilling technique called hydraulic fracturing. This method, called fracking, entails drilling a L-shaped well deep into shale and pumping millions of gallons of water laced with industrial chemicals — chemicals which the energy companies are not legally bound to disclose. The poisonous fluid fractures the shale and releases natural gas deposits for collection.

“Josh Dorner” - Newt Gingrich Secretly Funneled $350,000 To Anti-Gay Hate Groups Last Year

Josh Dorner

Mar 16th, 2011

http://thinkprogress.org/2011/03/16/newt-gingrich-anti-gay-hate/

Last year, former Speaker Newt Gingrich offered his vocal support for the ultimately successful campaign to oust three of the nine Iowa Supreme Court justices who had unanimously ruled in favor of marriage equality. As Gingrich courts social conservatives while exploring a possible presidential bid, new disclosures from his camp indicate that he and his associates bankrolled more than one-third of the $850,000 campaign to remove the Iowa justices.

ThinkProgress previously reported on $200,000 that Gingrich funneled from an anonymous donor to the anti-marriage equality group Iowa for Freedom, which was also being funded by AFA Action, the political arm of the virulently anti-gay American Family Association. The Associated Press revealed yesterday that one of the cogs in Gingrich’s vast network of business enterprises and front groups, ReAL Action, provided $125,000 to AFA Action. The Des Moines Register reported this morning that ReAL Action also contributed $25,000 to yet another Iowa anti-LGBT group, the Iowa Faith and Freedom Coalition.

“Tanya Somanader” - Wasserman Shultz: GOP’s Anti-Abortion Bill Is ‘Nothing Short Of A Tax Increase’ On Women And Small Businesses

Tanya Somanader

March 16, 2011

http://thinkprogress.org/2011/03/16/dws-abortion-tax-increase/

House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) has insisted that Republicans “do not want to raise taxes on anyone” because the American people demanded: “stop tax hikes.” Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-VA) has said that, in a time when the government is trying to spur private businesses to create jobes, Republicans “don’t believe that tax rates should go up” at all. However, as the Wonk Room’s Pat Garofalo notes, “House Republicans are evidently getting over their allergy for tax increases, at least when it helps them restrict a woman’s right to choose.”

“Jeremy Laurance” - Doctors urge the Government to abandon health reform Bill

http://www.independent.co.uk/life-style/health-and-families/health-news/doctors-urge-the-government-to-abandon-health-reform-bill-2242911.html

Doctors' leaders yesterday stopped short of a vote of no confidence in Health Secretary Andrew Lansley but demanded that he halt his plans to reform the NHS and condemned his failure to act on their concerns.

In what is turning out to be a torrid week for the Health Secretary, the British Medical Association (BMA) called on him to withdraw the Health and Social Care Bill, now going through Parliament, and warned that it would lead to the "fragmentation" and "privatisation" of the NHS.
