Mental Illness In USA Widespread And Commonly Untreated

Nearly one fifth of all adults in the United States say they had a mental illness during the preceding 12 months. Of serious concern is that only 37% got any professional medical help, according to a new report issued by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). The report also revealed that there are 4.4 million Americans with a "serious mental health illness"who are walking around untreated.

Chris Hedges: Power and the Tiny Acts of Rebellion

There is no hope left for achieving significant reform or restoring our democracy through established mechanisms of power. The electoral process has been hijacked by corporations. The judiciary has been corrupted and bought. The press shuts out the most important voices in the country and feeds us the banal and the absurd. Universities prostitute themselves for corporate dollars. Labor unions are marginal and ineffectual forces. The economy is in the hands of corporate swindlers and speculators. And the public, enchanted by electronic hallucinations, remains passive and supine. We have no tools left within the power structure in our fight to halt unchecked corporate pillage.

Gwynne Dyer: Not a Bad START

It was a Republican president, Richard Nixon, who signed the first Strategic Arms Limitation Treaty, SALT, with the old Soviet Union in 1972. It was another Republican president, the elder George Bush, who signed the Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty, START, with Russia in 1993. But it was a Democratic president who signed the New Start treaty, and that seems to be the problem.

Robin Broad & John Cavangah: Yes, There Are Alternatives

In most countries, there is a dangerous myth that there is no alternative to the past 30 years' path of gearing economies toward the global market. Some are taking steps to encourage more "rooted" alternatives.

Biotech company secretly releases millions of GM mosquitoes in Cayman Islands

(NaturalNews) Scientists at British biotechnology giant Oxitec recently developed a genetically-modified (GM) mosquito that, apart from a specific chemical antibiotic, is unable to successfully repopulate. And the company recently released millions of these GM mosquitoes in the Cayman Islands to see what would happen -- and they did so without proper approval or announcement -- prompting outrage by experts and the public over the unknown consequences of conducting such an irresponsible experiment.

Diana Johnstone: Encircling Russia, Targeting China, NATO'S True Role in US Grand Strategy

On November 19 and 20, NATO leaders meet in Lisbon for what is billed as a summit on NATOs Strategic Concept. Among topics of discussion will be an array of scary threats, from cyberwar to climate change, as well as nice protective things like nuclear weapons and a high tech Maginot Line boondoggle supposed to stop enemy missiles in mid-air. The NATO leaders will be unable to avoid talking about the war in Afghanistan, that endless crusade that unites the civilized world against the elusive Old Man of the Mountain, Hassan i Sabah, eleventh century chief of the Assassins in his latest reincarnation as Osama bin Laden. There will no doubt be much talk of our shared values.

Martha Rosenberg: 15 Dangerous Drugs Big Pharma Shoves Down Our Throats

n the pharmaceutical industrys rush to get drugs to market, safety usually comes last. Long studies to truly assess a drug's risks just delay profits after all -- and if problems do emerge after medication hits the market, settlements are usually less than profits. Remember, Vioxx still made money.

Climate Change and Disease Will Spark New Food Crisis, Says UN

A food crisis could overtake the world in 2011, according to the Food and Agriculture Organisation, an agency of the United Nations.
