"Robert Johnson" - New Cyber Attacks Will Target Power Grids And Major Public Works

Commander of the new U.S. Cyber Command General Keith Alexander said Tuesday that he's most concerned about attacks targeting America's electrical grid, and destroying large public machinery.

Gen. Alexander says cyber-attacks over the Internet are shifting from data theft to physical assaults.

First, he pointed to the 2003 Northeast power outage started by a downed tree branch. Following the initial accident at the pole, the utility company's computer entered "pause" mode, cutting power to people in several states and illustrating the effect an intruder could have on any power grid.

"Mark Karlin" - Uninsured by Ron Paul, His 2008 Campaign Manager Died Owing $400,000 for Medical Care

Ron Paul knows something about uninsured men dying without health insurance. Kent Snyder, who was Paul's 2008 presidential campaign manager, died on June 26 of that year without any medical coverage. His hospital bills had accumulated to $400,000 at the time of his passing.

The Washington Post noted in an obituary for Snyder, 49 [4]:

Mr. Snyder had been associated with Paul, a Texas Republican with Libertarian leanings, for more than 20 years. He worked as a top aide for Paul in 1988, when the congressman sought the presidency on the Libertarian ticket.

"Devon DB" - America, A Sunset Empire

The America: An Empire In Decline series examines the rise and decline of the American Empire. In Part 1, Dawn Of A New Century, I analyzed America’s original plans for the 21st century, immediately after the end of the Cold War, which imagined a world where the US would be the sole superpower and preventive diplomacy would be used to ensure no flare-ups occurred.

However, with the rise of the neoconservatives, first with the Project for the New American Century think tank and then later in the form of Donald Rumsfeld, Dick Cheney, Paul Wolfowitz, and Condoleeza Rice as Cabinet members in the Bush administration, a vision that saw the fall of the Soviet Union as an opportunity for the United States to become a full-fledged empire became deeply rooted in the American political and military psyche. They envisioned a world in which America would be the dominant economic, political, and military power and whose enemies and potential rivals would be kept in check. All they needed was an incident to make this possible and the devastating attacks on 9/11 provided an excuse for the US to God the globe.

"Tom Engelhardt" - Let’s Cancel 9/11 Bury the War State's Blank Check at Sea

Let’s bag it.

I’m talking about the tenth anniversary ceremonies for 9/11, and everything that goes with them: the solemn reading of the names of the dead, the tolling of bells, the honoring of first responders, the gathering of presidents, the dedication of the new memorial, the moments of silence.  The works.

Let’s just can it all.  Shut down Ground Zero.  Lock out the tourists.  Close “Reflecting Absence,” the memorial built in the “footprints” of the former towers with its grove of trees, giant pools, and multiple waterfalls before it can be unveiled this Sunday.  Discontinue work on the underground National September 11 Museum due to open in 2012.  Tear down the Freedom Tower (redubbed 1 World Trade Center after our “freedom” wars went awry), 102 stories of “the most expensive skyscraper ever constructed in the United States.” (Estimated price tag: $3.3 billion.)  Eliminate that still-being-constructed, hubris-filled 1,776 feet of building, planned in the heyday of George W. Bush and soaring into the Manhattan sky like a nyaah-nyaah invitation to future terrorists.  Dismantle the other three office towers being built there as part of an $11 billion government-sponsored construction program.  Let’s get rid of it all.   If we had wanted a memorial to 9/11, it would have been more appropriate to leave one of the giant shards of broken tower there untouched.

" Reinvestigate 9/11"- Majority Feel 9/11 Story Might be Wrong In Important Respects

For more info or interviews please call Ian Henshall on 01273 326862 or 079469 39217
Today Ian was on LBC 8.30am, this evening scheduled on Talksport  11.30pm

A new opinion poll shows surprisingly high levels of doubt in the UK over the official story of the 9/11 attacks. The poll, conducted by ICM on behalf of Reinvestigate 911, found that more people agree than disagree that the official account of what happened on 9/11 might turn out to be wrong in important respects. Only 8% strongly agree that they have been told the full story of the 9/11 attacks.

Of those who expressed an opinion 37% agreed that rogue elements in the American intelligence services may have made a decision prior to 9/11 to allow a terrorist attack to take place. Richard Clarke, White House anti-terror co-ordinator at the time, said recently that the 9/11 attacks could have been foiled but for an explicit agreement within the CIA to withhold vital information from him and the FBI. Clarke says he cannot explain this behaviour. At the time the CIA were prohibited by law from operating in the US.

"Susan Lindauer"- 9/11 Whistleblower and Former U.S. Asset covering Iraq and Libya

CIA TOLD NEW YORK TIMES ABOUT 9/11 WARNINGS,

                              COMMAND NEGLIGENCE: NY Times Lied

9/11 denialists like to swear smugly that the official 9/11 story must be true, because the government could never keep such an important secret without getting caught.

Somebody would spill the beans, right? In fact, a number of us tried. Media watchers should savvy up, as the air waves get blitzed this weekend with 9/11 emorials. If the corporate media had done its job as a watch dog, the world would have got an earful reliable intelligence sources debunking the official 9/11 story.

"Paul Craig Roberts" - 9/11 After A Decade, Have We Learned Anything?

In a few days it will be the tenth anniversary of September 11, 2001.  How well has the US government’s official account of the event held up over the decade?

Not very well.  The chairman, vice chairman, and senior legal counsel of the 9/11 Commission wrote books partially disassociating themselves from the commission’s report.  They said that the Bush administration put obstacles in their path, that information was withheld from them, that President Bush agreed to testify only if he was chaperoned by Vice President Cheney and neither were put under oath, that Pentagon and FAA officials lied to the commission and that the commission considered referring the false testimony for investigation for obstruction of justice.

"Bill McKibben"- My Arrest at the White House

I didn’t think it was possible, but my admiration for Martin Luther King, Jr., grew even stronger these past days.

As I headed to jail as part of the first wave of what is turning into the biggest civil disobedience action in the environmental movement for many years, I had the vague idea that I would write something. Not an epic like King's “Letter from a Birmingham Jail,” but at least, you know, a blog post. Or a tweet.

But frankly, I wasn’t up to it. The police, surprised by how many people turned out on the first day of two weeks of protests at the White House, decided to teach us a lesson. As they told our legal team, they wanted to deter anyone else from coming -- and so with our first crew they were… kind of harsh.

"Laura Bauer"- Child hunger is increasing in rural areas, study finds

Robert Krogsdale says his six daughters have never missed dinner or gone hungry.

But look at what the Bates County, Mo., man and his wife, Reanna, have to do to make that happen: They use food stamps. They buy bread and fruit on sale. They rely on cheap staples like spaghetti. For Christmas, his parents give them packages of beef they use throughout the year.

And once a month, the Krogsdales drive 17 miles from their rural home into Butler, Mo. — sometimes in the family’s 12-passenger, 12 miles-per-gallon van — to load up on groceries at a food pantry.

“I make sure they have their plates and mouths full,” Krogsdale said of their six daughters, as well as two stepsons who are with the family on the weekends. “If it boils down to I don’t eat, it’s real simple.”

Often, when people think of the nation’s hungry kids, the image is of families in urban-core neighborhoods. In rural areas, where farmers harvest crops and ranchers raise livestock, kids do all right — or at least that was the perception of many.

But a study released today by Feeding America, a national hunger relief organization, shows that in every county in the nation, children live in food-insecure homes — where there’s sometimes not enough nutritious food or, at times, any food at all. Food-insecurity rates for children nationwide range from 7 percent in one North Dakota county to 50 percent in two Texas counties.

In Missouri, the study found 24.8 percent of children — almost one in four — living in homes where there’s sometimes not enough to eat. In Kansas, it was 22.6 percent.

For the 26 counties in and around Kansas City that the Harvesters food bank serves, child food-insecurity rates range from 18.5 percent to 29.2 percent. And some of the more rural counties are harder hit than their urban neighbors.

According to the first-ever Map the Meal Gap Child Food Insecurity study, which used numbers provided by the U.S. Department of Agriculture for 2009, the food-insecurity rate for children is 28.9 percent in Carroll County, Mo., and 29.2 percent in Bates County.

“I’m amazed at how bad the problem is,” said Joyce Fitzpatrick, who has run the Community Food Pantry of Butler for 10 years and has watched demand “explode” the past two years.

She’s seen a 40 percent increase this year over last. For Bates County, she said, the main issue is jobs.

“A lot of our folks were traveling to the city to work, and some can’t afford to do that because of the gas prices,” she said. “…Some of my volunteers keep saying to me, ‘I don’t know how you keep it together.’

“But you just do,” Fitzpatrick said. “Sometimes, though, you do wonder if you’re going to have something on the shelves.

"Medea Benjamin" - No Way to Honor Dr. King

The ceremonies for the new Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial in Washington DC were kicked off on August 24 at an event billed as Honoring Global Leaders for Peace. But some of those honored are a far cry from King’s beloved community of the poor and oppressed. The tribute to peacemakers, organized by the MLK National Memorial Foundation, was mostly a night applauding warmakers, corporate profiteers and co-opted musicians.

The night started out with great promise when MC Andrea Mitchell mentioned Dr. King’s brilliant anti-war speech Beyond Vietnam as a key to understanding the real Dr. King. And sure, there were a few wonderful moments—a song by Stevie Wonder, a speech about nonviolence by the South African Ambassador and a quick appearance by Jesse Jackson in which he managed to spit out a call to “study war no more.”
