Biochemist calls for higher vitamin D recommendations

Ethan A. Huff, staff writer

(NaturalNews) A plethora of research about the benefits of vitamin D has been flooding the mainstream news for a while now, and Anthony Norman, professor emeritus of biochemistry and biomedical sciences at the University of California, Riverside, believes government recommendations worldwide for the vitamin need to be updated. He and others believe that most adults need between 2,000 and 4,000 international units (IU) of vitamin D a day, an intake level far higher than what is currently suggested.

Resveratrol promotes health and longevity; study shows it suppresses inflammation, free radicals

by: S. L. Baker, features writer

(NaturalNews) Resveratrol, a phytochemical found in red grapes, grape juice and red wine, has been shown to prolong life in yeast and animals because of its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. But does that mean it has the same effects on the human body? University at Buffalo (UB) endocrinologists have tested the natural compound for the first time in a prospective trial in people and found the answer appears to be "yes". And that finding adds to the growing amount of evidence that resveratrol may not only protect health but promote human longevity, too.

Sen. Harry Reid key player in Big Pharma's control over Washington

Thursday, August 12, 2010
by Mike Adams, the Health Ranger

(NaturalNews) Corruption in Washington is nothing new. Lobbyists for special interests have been padding the pockets of amoral politicians for longer than most of us have been alive, and they've been doing so with the help of a controlled media that rarely presents the facts without shrouding them in terms of "left" or "right" in order to confuse people. But as you'll see in this story, the corruption goes far deeper than most people realize, and a perfect example of this is the dishonorable legacy of Nevada Senator and U.S. Senate Majority Leader, Harry Reid. Reid was recently exposed for accepting large sums of money from Big Pharma in order to craft and guide the recently-passed health care bill in Big Pharma's favor.

How to Put a Stop to Corporate-Funded Government Before It Gets Totally Out of Hand

Already, major businesses and industries are taking advantage of the Supreme Court's Citizen United ruling, trying to buy our democracy outright.

Chemicals in water supply near Chicago linked to cancer

David Gutierrez, staff writer

(NaturalNews) A report by the Chicago Tribune has revealed that officials in the village of Crestwood, just outside Chicago, have been secretly introducing tainted well water into the town water supply for years.

"I feel deceived," village resident Tom Parkis said.

For years before the story broke, town residents had wondered if there might not be something wrong with their water. For example, Frank Caldario was diagnosed with kidney cancer in 2009, at the age of 30.

UK breast cancer rates four times higher than in eastern Africa

Ethan A. Huff, staff writer

(NaturalNews) A new World Cancer Research Fund (WCRF) report explains that British breast cancer rates are four times higher than they are in eastern African countries like Kenya and Tanzania. Researchers say the enormous disparity is due primarily to lifestyle and diet differences between the two regions.

"The fact that breast cancer rates in eastern Africa are so much lower than in the U.K. is a stark reminder that every year in this country, thousands of women are diagnosed with a case of cancer that could have been prevented," explained Dr. Rachel Thompson, deputy head of science at the WCRF, in response to the report.

US almond growers achieve court victory in fight against mandatory fumigation

Wednesday, August 11, 2010
by Mike Adams, the Health Ranger
Editor of NaturalNews.com (See all articles...)

(NaturalNews) Three years after the USDA destroyed the U.S. raw almond business by forcing almond producers to fumigate or pasteurize their nuts, a significant victory has been achieved that could overturn that onerous regulation. A federal appeals court has ruled that California almond farmers may now challenge the USDA regulation in the courts.

Wikileaks Did More to Impact the Afghan War Than 9 Years of Corporate Journalism

For the last few years, the war in Afghanistan seemed to be an afterthought in the U.S. media.

For the last few years, the war in Afghanistan seemed to be an afterthought in the U.S. media. That all changed in a hurry with the publication of tens of thousands of classified intelligence documents by the website WikiLeaks.

Those files were shared with several newspapers, each of which published extensive reports offering their interpretations of the documents. Suddenly, the chaos and violence of the Afghanistan War was back on the front pages and leading the network newscasts.

Is the News Coming From the Gulf Too Good To Be True? Unfortunately, Yes

Thad Allen may be struggling to find the oil, but that's not because it's all gone.

Over the past week, the headlines about the Deepwater Horizon oil spill have been good. After months of oil pouring into the Gulf, at last the well was capped. Even better, experts cited a recent document from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) showing that 75 percent of the oil is gone. As the good news flowed and the oil no longer did, government officials made optimistic remarks to the press about the situation. "The vast majority of the oil has been contained, it's been burned, it's been cleaned and that's good news for the people of the Gulf," White House Energy Adviser Carol Browner cheerfully reported recently. "Mother Nature will do her part, but we'll continue to be vigilant."

Chocolate That Cures Acne, Potato Chips That Lower Cholesterol -- Here Come the Nutraceuticals to a Store Near You

The food industry sees huge dollar signs in erasing the border between medicine and meals.

Cinnamon is no longer just the spunky spice on cinnamon toast. Turmeric is no longer just the bitter yellow dust that colors curry.

These days, both are hailed as superpowered disease-fighting "nutraceuticals" — part nutrient, part pharmaceutical. Along with many other once-humble substances (think pomegranates, fish oil and flax seeds), they're key ingredients in "functional foods," which comprise a booming $30-billion-a-year industry bent on erasing the border between medicine and meals.
