October 18, 2010 An increasingly popular bumper sticker reads, "Guns Don't Kill People -- RELIGION Kills People!" In light of recent events I would add religion kills young people: gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender young people.
October 18, 2010 GENEVA - The United Nations top official on the right to food has called for wholesale changes in farming methods to safeguard the environment and ensure everyone has enough to eat.
October 18, 2010 CARL Paladino began his New York gubernatorial campaign by bragging hed clean out Albany with a baseball bat. When an ally likened his main Albany target, the (Jewish) leader of the State Assembly, to an antichrist or Hitler, he enthusiastically endorsed the slur. We also learned of Paladinos repertory of gag e-mails among them a pornographic picture of a woman having sex with a horse and a photo of an African tribal ritual captioned Obama Inauguration Rehearsal. How blind we were not to recognize that his victory in a Republican primary under the proud Tea Party banner was inevitable.
October 18, 2010 We all know that the earth and all upon it face a growing crisis. Global climate change is rapidly advancing, melting glaciers, eroding soil, causing freak and increasingly wild storms, and displacing untold millions from rural communities to live in desperate poverty in peri-urban slums. Almost every human victim lives in the global South, in communities not responsible for greenhouse gas emissions. The atmosphere has already warmed up almost a full degree in the last several decades and a new Canadian study reports that we may be on course to add another 6 degrees Celsius (10.8 degrees Fahrenheit) by 2100.
October 18, 2010 In July of this year, the United Nations declared access to clean water a human right. The United States was among 41 nations that abstained from supporting the resolution. Since October 15th is Blog for Water Day, a close inspection of a common US practice fluoridating city water supplies is in order.
October 18, 2010 Staughton Lynd could have built an enviable career as an academic but for his conscience. His conscience led him as a young undergraduate disgusted by the elitism around him to drop out of Harvard, and tortured him when he returned to finish his degree. It plagued him after he received his doctorate from Columbia and saw him head to the segregated South to join his friend Howard Zinn in teaching history at the historically black Spelman College. It propelled him to become the director of Freedom Schools in the Mississippi Summer Project of 1964. It prodded him a year later to chair the first march against the Vietnam War in Washington, D.C., and join Tom Hayden and Herbert Aptheker on a trip to Hanoi.
October 18, 2010 Looming losses from the mortgage scandal dubbed "foreclosuregate" may qualify as the sort of systemic risk that, under the new financial reform bill, warrants the breakup of the too-big-to-fail banks. The Kanjorski amendment allows federal regulators to pre-emptively break up large financial institutions that-for any reason-pose a threat to U.S. financial or economic stability.
October 15, 2010 Glenn Beck has said on his show, "I'm going to be a progressive hunter..." and "drive a stake through the blood suckers." Beck has told his listeners, "they are taking you to be slaughtered." Isn't it time Beck and the Fox News network are branded by the appropriate government agencies as someone who is inciting, aiding and fomenting domestic terrorism?
