9/11 Families Ask: What Happened to the Third Building That Collapsed in the WTC Attacks?

A new television ad campaign featuring the family members of 9/11 victims has succeeded in garnering what 9/11 activists have lacked for years: serious treatment in the mainstream media. Granted, that media was Fox News host Geraldo Rivera, who in a former iteration ran a Jerry Springer-like daytime talk show. That and, the last time Rupert Murdoch's conservative-tilted television channel seriously talked about issues pertaining to 9/11, they were calling for a public official's resignation over a signature on one of the "9/11 truth" petitions.

Land of the Food Insecure: Record Rates of Hunger in US

Almost 15% of US households experienced a food shortage at some point in 2009, a government report has found. US authorities say that figure is the highest they have seen since they began collecting data in the 1990s, and a slight increase over 2008 levels.

Michael Hudson: Obama's Greatest Betrayal: The Coming Sell-Out to the Super Rich and What It Means for the Rest of Us

Now that President Obama is almost celebrating his bipartisan willingness to renew the tax cuts for the super-rich enacted under George Bush ten years ago, it is time for Democrats to ask themselves how strongly they are willing to oppose an administration that looks like Bush-Cheney III. Is this what they expected by Mr. Obamas promise to rise above partisan politics by ruling on behalf of Wall Street, now that it is the major campaign backer of both parties?

When Big Ag Attacks: Government-Sponsored Pesticide Propaganda

The White House garden may be green and unsullied by agricultural chemicals, but Obama's United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) just forked over $180,000 to fund an agribusiness-backed smear campaign against the Environmental Working Group's (EWG) "Shopper's Guide to Pesticides," which includes the "Dirty Dozen," a list of the foods most commonly found to have pesticide residue.

What is Happening with the Leahy Bill? A New Action Alert

At one point we almost lost—it’s still touch and go—but there is some good news to report. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D–NV) attempted a procedural maneuver last week—a unanimous consent agreement to bring the Food Safety Modernization Act (S. 510) to the Senate floor with Leahy’s original bill (S. 3767) and Sen. Diane Feinstein’s BPA amendment attached for consideration. ANH supporters will appreciate the irony of this. We were fighting tooth and nail against the Leahy bill, a dagger aimed at natural food and supplement producers, but have supported the Feinstein amendment aimed to get BPA out of water bottles. The choice, however, was clear. It was much more important to stop Leahy than to win on Feinstein.

Why Patrick Leahy’s Food Safety Accountability Act of 2010 Must Be Stopped

Last week we told you about the threat posed by Sen. Leahy’s new bill. This week we want to explain how important it is that all of us take action—immediately. The first problem, as we noted in our original piece, is that the bill calls for a jail term of up to ten years for any food or supplement producer who “misbrands” a product. Excuse us, but what does misbranding have to do with food safety? Is this another example of Congress not wanting a good crisis (recent food contamination) to go to waste? To this bill’s credit, it is short and more-or-less understandable. So why does it wander off the food safety subject almost at once?

Breaking News: NEW “Food Safety” Threat—Urgent Action Alert!

A brand new bill has just been introduced in the Senate. It’s supposed to hold accountable those who taint our food supply on purpose. But as drafted, it actually gives license to the FDA to target supplement and natural health product companies. Please take action today!

The Senate’s version of the food safety bill does not contain a criminal sanctions provision like the one in the House bill. ANH-USA has also been told by several key Senators that they would not allow this negative criminal provision into the Senate food safety bill, or into a final bill during the conference process, should the Senate bill pass. Knowing this, we suspect that this new Food Safety Accountability Act has been introduced in coordination with Congressman Henry Waxman (D–CA), who supports the House criminal sanctions language. If the original Senate food safety bill and this new Food Safety Accountability Act both pass, the two can easily be merged with the House bill during the conference process—and we will basically end up with the dreadful House bill.

A BPA Ban In The Food Safety Bill?

The widely used chemical bisphenol A (BPA) is an estrogen-mimicker. Some 200 animal studies have suggested that the substance is very harmful. Over 90 percent of Americans show some BPA in their “body burden”.
