The biggest question in America these days is how to revive the economy.

The biggest question among activists now occupying Wall Street and dozens of other cities is how to strike back against the nation’s almost unprecedented concentration of income, wealth, and political power in the top 1 percent.

The two questions are related. With so much income and wealth concentrated at the top, the vast middle class no longer has the purchasing power to buy what the economy is capable of producing. (People could pretend otherwise as long as they could treat their homes as ATMs, but those days are now gone.) The result is prolonged stagnation and high unemployment as far as the eye can see.

Until we reverse the trend toward inequality, the economy can’t be revived.

A group of congressional Democrats is pushing on with their efforts to enact a tax on financial transactions, in the face of what they acknowledge are long odds.

The financial transactions tax has prominent supporters in Europe, including President Nicolas Sarkozy of France and Chancellor Angela Merkel of Germany.

But the Obama administration has decided against embracing the idea, most recently at a meeting of the Group of 20 nations in France. Meanwhile, Republicans on Capitol Hill remain opposed to tax increases, and banking and financial advocacy groups are also fiercely against the transaction tax.

Democrats backing the idea are well aware of those roadblocks. But they also say the transaction tax, which has also been endorsed by Bill Gates, would both help raise revenue to tackle deficits and rein in speculation in the financial world.

“The Republican majority will decide whether we take this bill up or it passes,” said Peter Welch (D-Vt.). “But it’s kind of hard to defend some of the conduct.”

Under the proposal introduced by Rep. Peter DeFazio (D-Ore.) and Sen. Tom Harkin (D-Iowa), trading of stocks, bonds and certain other transactions would be hit with a tax of three basis points – or, essentially, a tax of .03 percent per trade.

Statements leaked anonymously ahead of next week’s International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) report on Iran’s nuclear program warn that the study will reveal evidence that Iran has been working secretly to develop a nuclear weapons capability.

According to Western diplomats who refused to reveal their identity, the evidence will include satellite images of what of is supposedly a large steel container used for high-explosives tests related to nuclear arms as well as intelligence that Iran made computer models of a nuclear warhead.

WASHINGTON — The jobs crisis has left so many people out of work for so long that most of America's unemployed are no longer receiving unemployment benefits.

Early last year, 75 percent were receiving checks. The figure is now 48 percent — a shift that points to a growing crisis of long-term unemployment. Nearly one-third of America's 14 million unemployed have had no job for a year or more.

Congress is expected to decide by year's end whether to continue providing emergency unemployment benefits for up to 99 weeks in the hardest-hit states. If the emergency benefits expire, the proportion of the unemployed receiving aid would fall further.

The ranks of the poor would also rise. The Census Bureau says unemployment benefits kept 3.2 million people from slipping into poverty last year. It defines poverty as annual income below $22,314 for a family of four.

Yet for a growing share of the unemployed, a vote in Congress to extend the benefits to 99 weeks is irrelevant. They've had no job for more than 99 weeks. They're no longer eligible for benefits.

Bangkok, the capital of Thailand and a gem of South-East Asia, is sinking due to the most serious flood in the last 50 years. Most of the city’s 50 districts are expected to be flooded in the next three days. The peak of the flood is forecast for Saturday afternoon.

By that time the water level in the Chao Phraya river will exceed the critical point by 15cm. The authorities have already warned that this may be enough to burst the dams and locks. The worst scenario is that Bangkok will be completely flooded. In this case districts along the river and numerous canals may remain under 2m of water. Alexey Kokorin, an expert of the Russian branch of the World Wildlife Foundation, describes the reasons for this anomaly:

One of the most frequently repeated, recycled and dismissive questions about Occupy Wall Street is its supposed lack of an “agenda.”

The “what do you people want” question has featured in media interviews almost to the exclusion of all others.

It’s as if the movement won’t be taken seriously by some, unless and until, it enunciates list of “demands” and defines itself in a way that can allow others, especially a cynical media, to label and pigeonhole it.

Many are just frothing at the mouth for some political positions they can expose as shallow or absurd. Teams of pundits are being primed to go on the attack once they have some bullet points to refute.

(Many police departments don’t need bullet points to go on the attack. They have been having a field day arresting occupiers in many cities, while collecting overtime and readying their own bullets as needed.)

Some on Wall Street already denounce these adversaries as “unsophisticated” for their formulation of the 99% versus the 1%. You’d expect the 1 % to reject this way of seeing the world.

On the right, there is no factual inaccuracy or bizarre incident they won’t invoke to dismiss a movement they lack the mental tools to understand.

The Drudge Report was delighted to expose an incident involving public masturbation in one city. A group of gun nuts blasted away a group of people who in their majority are deeply disappointed with President Obama’s non-leadership on economic issues.

Norma Erickson - FDA Information on Gardasil – Betrayal of the Public Trust?

In response to the recent announcement by SANE Vax Inc. of the discovery of genetically modified HPV DNA residue in multiple vials of Gardasil, the FDA posted the following page on their site,FDA Information on Gardasil – Presence of DNA Fragments Expected, No Safety Risk. The FDA lists several ‘key facts’ in an obvious attempt to allay any fears which may have arisen over the discovery of foreign DNA in yet another ‘safe and effective’ vaccine. Unfortunately, these ‘key facts’ raise more questions than answers.

In spite of the fact the FDA claims their mission is, helping the public get the accurate, science-based information they need to use medicines, there are no scientific references and no indication that these ‘key facts’ are anything more than damage control statements. American medical consumers deserve better from an agency funded by taxpayers and entrusted with the mission of being responsible for protecting the public health by assuring the safety, efficacy and security of human and veterinary drugs, biological products, medical devices…… (FDA mission statement)

According to the Consumer Justice Group, in the last 27 years, there have been 31 drugs approved ‘safe and effective’ by the FDA which were subsequently withdrawn from the market due to safety concerns not uncovered during clinical trials. No one will ever know the true cost in human suffering resulting from adverse reactions to these 31 FDA approved ‘safe and effective’ medications.

The aftermath of the discovery of a genetically engineered virus in 100% of the Gardasil vials tested by SANE Vax Inc. has had global governments running and Merck’s marketing department at a loss for words.¹ That coupled with Michelle Bachmann’s remarks on not getting her daughters vaccinated with Gardasil at the September 12 Republican Party Tea Party debate in front of millions of viewers – and then stating the next day that she met a mother of a now ‘mentally retarded’ injured girl who had received Gardasil.  On October 9 Governor Jerry Brown signed AB 499 into law giving the custody of minors age 12 and over to the State of California for the treatment of STD’s.  All three issues have spotlighted Gardasil and have brought negative attention to Merck’s multi-million dollar award-winning creating a market out of thin air ‘One Less’ campaign.
