A review of waste management practices and their impact on human health

This work reviews (i) the most recent information on waste arisings and waste disposal options in the world, in the European Union (EU), in Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OEDC) countries, and in some developing countries (notably China) and (ii) the potential direct and indirect impact of waste management activities on health. Though the main focus is primarily on municipal solid waste (MSW), exposure to bioaerosols from composting facilities and to pathogens from sewage treat- ment plants are considered. The reported effects of radioactive waste are also briefly reviewed. Hundreds of epidemiological studies reported on the incidence of a wide range of possible illnesses on employees of waste facilities and on the resident population. The main conclusion of the overall assessment of the lit- erature is that the evidence of adverse health outcomes for the general population living near landfill sites, incinerators, composting facilities and nuclear installations is usually insufficient and inconclusive. There is convincing evidence of a high risk of gastrointestinal problems associated with pathogens orig- inating at sewage treatment plants. In order to improve the quality and usefulness of epidemiological studies applied to populations residing in areas where waste management facilities are located or planned, preference should be given to prospective cohort studies of sufficient statistical power, with access to direct human exposure measurements, and supported by data on health effect biomarkers and susceptibility biomarkers.

Death by Vaccination: The Gates Foundation and the New Eugenics

By Gary Null & Richard Gale

"Vaccines? I love them."

While lecturing at the elitist TED 2010 conference in Long Beach, CA,  Bill Gates slipped a statement while speaking on the dangers of climate change and over population: “Vaccines? I love them.”

Today the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation is “the most powerful charity in the world, and one of the most quietly influential international organizations of any sort.”[1] The Foundation is funded to the tune of  $34.6 billion plus an additional $30 billion from Warren Buffet’s investments. This is almost the entire budget of the World Health Organization (WHO).

Combating the “The Noon-Day Demon”: A Study on How to Overcome Depression Naturaly

By Gary Null

Depression"20% of adults in the U.S. experience one or more depressive episodesVirginia Woolf, Ernest Hemingway, Michelangelo Buonarroti, Gustav Mahler. What did they have in common, other than their great talents? They all suffered from what author Andrew Solomon very appropriately call “The Noon-Day Demon” : Depression. Dr. Jay Lombard, Board Certified Neurologist and former Chief of Neurology at Westchester Square Medical Center, author of “The Brain Wellness Plan,” puts depression at the top of the list of modern epidemics. According to Dr. Lombard, 20% of adults in the U.S. experience one or more depressive episodes, while 5% receive a diagnosis of clinical depression. Of the latter group 15% of the cases end in suicide. An especially alarming trend is the increase of incidence of depression among teens and young adults, and even children. Statistics show that an average of 14 teens kill themselves every day. That’s 5,000 kids a year. It is estimated that 5% of American teenagers currently suffer from depression severe enough to warrant medical treatment, but these numbers may not reflect a much more alarming reality. It is no surprise, given these statistics, that pharmaceutical companies are so eager to fund research aimed at finding effective relief for this life threatening condition. And yet, current drug treatment seems to fall short of expectations. It works sometimes, for some people, but for many it becomes a frustrating juggling act from one drug to another, waiting for as elusive relief that never seems to come, or never seems to stay. And while the initial lessening of symptoms offered by antidepressants is desirable and necessary, it carries the potential for serious, long-term, undesirable side effects such as tardive diskenesia, paranoid and psychotic reactions, and liver malfunctions, among others.

THE HEART OF THE MATTER: Understanding and Reversing Cardiovascular Disease

By Gary Null -- More people suffer from cardiovascular disease than from any other condition. Cardiovascular disease, including stroke, is an ongoing process. You don't wake up one day and suddenly have a heart attack. Similarly, the underlying reason you have a stroke is not something that happened ten minutes ago. No, both of these events represent a terrible breakdown in your system. An accumulation of toxic and inflammatory reactions has reached the state at which your body can no longer defend itself That is when you end up going into crisis. When that happens, you'll want to investigate every major way to fortify and protect your body, and use the most appropriate ones.

Cause and Effect: How to protect your brain against degeneration

By Gary Null

Recent studies suggest that by the year 2050, approximately 30 percent of people living in industrialized countries will be sixty-five years of age or older. That means that there will be an increase in neurodegenerative disorders that may cause considerable cognitive and physical impairment and shortened life span. And when we see someone like Bill Clinton with a coronary triple bypass operation, we must question how is it that none of his doctors noticed his health condition until it reached such a critical stage. The truth is that his health was allowed to deteriorate because the best doctors in America did not pay attention to his health until he had overt signs of heart failure. No one paid attention to Ronald Reagan until he was in the early stages of Alzheimer's disease. The same goes for Charlton Heston, Michael J. Fox, and Janet Reno, celebrities who have made us familiar with the diseases that have afflicted them. But never once did anyone ever say, "Could it have been anything that they did or didn't do that caused them to become sick?" Instead we all assumed they were doomed to their fates by their genes.

What I want to say to you about this is something crucial to the paradigm shift that I am proposing: our genes can only be as healthful as the medium in which we allow them to exist.

I speak with hundreds of people yearly about these concerns, and the one thing I've learned is that the greatest concern for most of the aging baby boomers is not so much the threat of heart disease, cancer, or even diabetes (which all have medical treatments of some kind). Rather, what people fear most is the loss of mental acuity. In particular, they fear that Alzheimer's, dementia, and Parkinson's are in their not too distant futures. As they age, they see a loss in their cognitive function which is the loss in their ability to memorize and recognize. And they fear these early signs are sentences of doom.

Few people ask, "What is the cause of these age-related cognitive dysfunctions?" Were they to genuinely consider such a question, they would find the following causes: chronic inflammation, which damages both central and cerebral blood vessels; bad diet, which leads to nutritional deficiencies; hormone deficiencies; impaired breathing, which leads to decreased oxygen to the brain and impaired circulation; a deficiency in essential fatty acids (EFAs), which every brain cell requires; free radical damage; the adverse effects from prescription medicine; and damage from environmental pollution.

With an intelligent game plan, however, the baby boomers need not live in fear of mental decline. These conditions can be prevented and reversed with lifestyle modifications. It's an exercise in simple cause and effect.

How Do Plants Fight Disease? Breakthrough Research Offers a Clue

ScienceDaily (Mar. 28, 2011) — How exactly bacterial pathogens cause diseases in plants remains a mystery and continues to frustrate scientists working to solve this problem. Now Wenbo Ma, a young plant pathologist at the University of California, Riverside, has performed research on the soybean plant in the lab that makes major inroads into our understanding of plant-pathogen interactions, a rapidly developing area among the plant sciences.

Peak Water Has Already Come and Gone

Canadian Kevin Freedman is celebrating World Water Day Tuesday by living on 25 litres of water a day, instead of the North American average of 330 litres per day. And he has enlisted 31 others in his "Water Conservation Challenge" to go water - lean, using just 25 litres per day for cooking, drinking, cleaning, and sanitation for the entire month of March.
