Introduction

Dr. Stephen Barrett is a ubiquitous figure in the world of health and medicine with a unique talent. 

A talent, described by Health and Human Services official, Dr. Thomas R. Eng, as a gift for widely 

"[influencing] behavior change" via interactive media. Elaborating, Eng states that "[Barrett] tailors 

information and interactions to the individual," adding, "In print media, there is some kind of 

vetting. In interactive, anyone or their brother can slap a Web page together."

One assumes that Barrett, in his efforts and opinions, is authoritative and correct, speaking as a 

retired physician / psychiatrist who's been interviewed on innumerable occasions by CNN, The 

New York Times, has testified as an expert before congress, and, in a larger sense, has been 

adopted by mainstream media as the "consumer watchdog" du jour within the field of medicine. 

Well, alternative medicine, more specifically. 

He has authored reports on many of the most accomplished practitioners and experts in the 

alternative health movement and in doing so, has generated a fair amount of controversy and mixed 

media attention. So much, in fact, that the reports on his site have come to dominate web search 

engine results, and in effect, preemptively tainting the reputations of hundreds of legitimate, well 

credentialed alternative health practitioners. Upon discovering this, my curiosity was piqued and I 

felt compelled to conduct some independent research on the matter, and hopefully, reach a 

conclusion as to whether Barrett was, indeed, an expert, or guilty of what Dr. Eng describes as 

"medical McCarthyism".

My focus would be the history and relationship between Barrett and Dr. Gary Null. Null is 

arguably the most respected, prolific advocate and high-profile voice in the alternative heath 

movement, influencing a massively wide spectrum of people throughout a varied host of philanthropic efforts and causes. The purpose of this paper is to not to bring direct challenge to 

Barrett's work or ideology, but rather to present facts and convey reasoned, journalistic 

interrogation into the heart of this debate. To that end, we can look to Null's extensive work and 

research on the negative effects of fluoride, mercury, vaccines, sugar and caffeine, all of which, 

Barrett has called in to question. Research will demonstrate that science firmly supports all of 

Null's conclusions and solutions on these topics. Fact checking and research is the cornerstone of 

the journalistic process, yet, Barrett and those media outlets who would employ his subjective 

opinion as scientific fact, quite simply, have not done their homework here.

Gary Null, PhD and Nancy Ashley, VMD - GOV. NIKKI HALEY REJECTS GARDASIL: A MOMENT OF SANITY IN A SEA OF CORPORATE-SPONSORED CONFUSION

Nikki Haley, Governor of South Carolina, made headlines on Tuesday by vetoing a bill initiated by the Democrats which would provide sixth graders with government-sponsored information encouraging parents to get the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine for their children as well as one free HPV vaccine for seventh graders.  Haley has received a barrage of criticism for her actions, and charges of hypocrisy for having previously sponsored a bill in 2007 that would have mandated the HPV vaccine in South Carolina, even though she ultimately withdrew her backing because the bill did not contain an opt-out provision.  While the current bill had broad bipartisan support, Governor Haley rejected it as unnecessary and because it would be a precursor to a vaccine mandate entirely dependent on government funding.  More importantly, however, Haley was quoted as saying her previous support of a human papillomavirus vaccine mandate was a mistake:  now that she has a 14 year-old daughter she feels differently about “what I am going to do as a parent and what I want for my child.”¹

Gary Null - The New American Folly in Libya

What happens when we extend the logic and beliefs of Ed Schultz and others, including Rachel Maddow and Lawrence O’Donnell, who accept Obama’s rationale for intervening militarily in Libya, which mirror those of the neocons and personalities like O’Reilly and Hannity on the radical right?  For the reason that Gaddafi was responsible for the bombing of the Pan Am Flight 103 over Lockerbie Scotland, killing 259 passengers, we are being told that arming, funding and training any opposition factions in Libya is perfectly justified. But then, is it not also true by that same logic that any civilians or innocent bystanders that were killed, tortured or disappeared as a direct result of America’s interventions in other nations are also justified to attack Americans and US interests globally?  It is this old adage of “an eye for an eye” reactionary posturing that repeatedly leads us into multiple disasters, wars, revolutions, regime changes and a trail of failed foreign policies.

Gary Null PhD and Nancy Ashley MS, VMD - THE MYTH THAT VACCINATION EQUALS IMMUNIZATION (Part 2)

Currently, the American public through our government agencies, the CDC, the FDA the US Public Health Service, the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases is being told that only by vaccinating all children and infants, all adults and seniors can we confer complete protective immunity from major diseases, whether H1N1, the seasonal flu, chicken pox, measles, hepatitis, etc. to any given individual. The CDC is celebrating its annual Influenza Vaccination Week which runs from December 4^th through the 10^th.¹ There will be a media onslaught as they try to persuade us that we will be in dire straights if we don’t get the flu vaccine. All of the regulatory bodies and the opinion leaders, the CDC, the FDA, the Institute of Allergies and Infectious Diseases, the AMA, the American Academy of Pediatrics and all the health care providers would have us believe that flu is a serious illness that can only be prevented by annual vaccination of everyone from 6 months of age on up. They try to persuade us by showing celebrities like Anderson Cooper getting a vaccine on coast-to-coast TV under the watchful gaze of Dr. Sanjay Gupta. Or they try to instill us with fear: flu is unpredictable, it can be severe, it can kill -- and there might not be enough vaccine for everyone! What if there is a pandemic? Should we be worried? Should we get the vaccine to protect our friends and loved ones? Maybe not. Let’s take a look at some of the facts the CDC would rather you didn’t know.

Is It Really Dangerous Not to Get the Flu Vaccine?

The CDC’s website used to state that 36,000 Americans die of flu each year, but this number was always seriously exaggerated. First, the CDC inflated the numbers by lumping together deaths from flu and pneumonia as though they were the same thing when actually, the annual deaths from pneumonia not caused by flu have always been far greater than those from flu. More significantly, this number was never based on recorded deaths. It came instead from a statistical model which only estimates mortality but doesn’t actually count fatalities.² This year, however, the CDC’s website reflects the criticism they have received about this overstatement. In an impressive downward revision, the CDC now states that “over a period of 30 years, between 1976 and 2006, estimates of flu-associated deaths in the United States range from a low of about 3,000 to a high of about 49,000 people.”³ Quite a difference! For 2007, the CDC’s own statistics show that the number of deaths actually caused by influenza was just 411, and the death rate was therefore only 1 out of 1,000,000 people.⁴

Gary Null & Richard Gale - Liberalism’s Death Bell Tolls

The rudiments of neo-fascism stole into American politics during the presidency of Ronald Reagan in the 1980s. At that time, government discovered that serving the private corporate sector was more profitable than serving American citizens. The Reagan and Bush regimes told us we must protect the wealth of the elite who profiteered from the free market because it would be from this tiny wealthy and powerful class that jobs would trickle down creating a free market that would benefit everyone. However, according to the Reagan agenda, for this scheme to work it was also necessary to cut back social entitlements, to lessen taxes, and eliminate as many federal and state regulations as necessary.

At the same time, the Reagan/Bush conservatives had no reservations about launching ever larger increases in government and military spending as well as providing tax relief and other subsidies for major corporations including Big Oil, Big Nuclear, Big Pharma, Big Food, Big Ag, and Big Insurance. Meanwhile, American citizens were gradually indoctrinated to believe that either all of the nation’s problems resulted from too much federal spending or, conversely, arose from too little government expenditure.

Gary Null and Richard Gale — Who are the True Progressives?

Each day we hear right-wing pundits excoriating president Obama and the Democrats for being progressive. They ridicule progressivism as being socialist, for favoring the redistribution of wealth and resources, for challenging the bank-driven free market agenda, and for advocating stricter regulations on Wall Street and the multinational corporatocracy. They accuse progressives of embracing Big Government and a mindset of entitlement on steroids.

On the Left, the Right is equally mocked continuously. A perfect example was Keith Olbermann’s “Worst Persons” segment, which pilloried all conservatives as neocon Republicans. Any mention of support for a third party candidate, such as Jill Stein, Rocky Anderson or Gary Johnson, is vehemently attacked by the Democratic Left. It continues to rail against Ralph Nader for causing Al Gore and John Kerry to lose their elections against Bush.
